Bio-Identical Hormones
I have had many questions from patients about the safety of hormone therapy. The terms "synthetic" versus "natural" basically were coined to designate between the premarin/prempro hormone replacement and the bio-identical hormone replacement. Bio-identical hormones are made from soy or yam (primarily soy) while premarin and prempro are derived from the concentrated urine of horses. I personally cannot think of anyone who would even consider drinking horse urine but the idea of making a medication from it sure caught on quick. Yet people still wonder why blood clots, cancer and stroke occur with these synthetic medications. Remember that all the "research" out there is primarily on these synthetic hormones. While there is a little research on bio-identical hormones, they are regarded by those who prescribe them to be just what the body ordered.
I only prescribe bio-identical hormones and I strive to make sure each patient is balanced and optimized. Most physicians and providers do not even think about balancing progesterone and estrogen. I have read research on estrogen alone or in combination with testosterone.
When is the medical community going to accept that our bodies need to be balanced?
